Annual Social Gathering – York September 10th, 2011
This year the meeting is to be held at the Burn Hall Hotel, York on Saturday September 10th. The hotel is approximately a 15 minute drive from the centre of York. Further details can be found here: www.burn-hall.co.uk The costs for the meeting have been negotiated, which, together with a subsidy from group funds, has reduced the rate to £15 per person for the day. This includes the hire of the room, free refreshments all day, and a buffet lunch. For those wishing to make a weekend of it, evening meals cost £19.95, and B&B for a double room has been reduced to £60 per room, per night. Menus will be available nearer the time so that you will be able to choose your meals in advance. This year the hotel does not require a room deposit, so please just let us know if you would like to have one reserved, and for how many nights. Twin rooms are available. Even if you are not sure at the moment, it is better to have a room reserved than to leave it until the last minute. The hotel does not need final numbers until 28 days before the event. All rooms are to be paid individually upon check out from the hotel. We have found in the past that it is much easier for us to pay the full cost of the function room hire and meals at the end of the weekend, there is no rush for payment of those, all we ask is that we have it by the meeting date. You can pay by PayPal, bank transfer or cheque. Details for the first two methods are available upon request. All cheques should be made payable to Alpha-1 UK Support Group and send it to: Alpha-1 UK Support Group 50 Wenning Lane Emerson Valley Milton Keynes MK4 2JF For many members the meeting will begin sometime on the Friday, when those travelling some distance will arrive at the hotel. It is a lovely time to catch up with friends old and new. Many choose to have a meal together in the evening and then rest before a rather hectic day on Saturday. Once Saturday arrives we usually find that everyone starts to gather in the function room between late morning and mid day and lunch is usually served from 1.00-1.30 p.m. Our meetings are essentially social occasions rather than formal affairs, however the Committee will be holding their AGM at some point over the weekend, and we do like to spend a few minutes going over any questions members may have. We are also hoping that, once again this year, we will have representatives from ADAPT joining us, to give a short presentation on all that is new in the alpha world. This will be followed by a short questions and answers session. The rest of the afternoon is taken up with a raffle, quizzes, competitions and general fun and chat, who knows what we may come up with by the time September arrives. At around 5.30 p.m., by which time we all need a rest, we usually head off to our rooms to relax for a while and prepare for the evening. Once again, we all meet up at around 7.30 p.m. for our evening meal, which is followed by some great entertainment from those who don’t mind joining in with the karaoke fun. So that’s just about it, by Sunday morning we’re all exhausted and have to bid an emotional farewell to a great bunch of people, at least until the next meeting. I do hope you would like to join us. If there is anything else you would like to know then please just ask. ………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Note: We always ask everyone to bring along any books, CDs or DVDs they no longer want so that we can have a stall to raise some funds. We also need unwanted presents or bottles of wine etc. for the raffle. Many members also bring along items for the auction. Last year we took £900 on the day, so even though it may seem just a small thing they all add up.
